Man Quilt Finished!

After 15+ years of quilting, I finally made The Man a quilt of his very own. To date, he has loved to nap on weekends with one of my very first quilts that features country cows (yes, well, a different era :). He called it his magic quilt. It was soft and adequate, but just wasn't long enough. And it had country cows on it.

After six months of searching for the right fabrics and right pattern, I settled on a cotton t from the Lucy's Crab Shack collection by Sweetwater that has all the beaches in America printed on it as the inspiration fabric. Isn't it great?! A hand of applause to Southern Fabrics who rushed me one more yard right before I left the US (the week before Christmas mind you) and didn't charge me a rush charge!

I bought some more fabrics from the collection and filled in with other beach fabrics and some solids.

The pattern was from the Fall of 2010 Stitch magazine--a kit is shown:

Somehow I got the top completed in December and then brought the whole project, including the batting, back to UB in a suitcase. That's the state he got it for Christmas.

Anyway, I finished it last week! He loves it. Says it has incredible nap magic. Which makes me incredibly happy.

I channel quilted the body alternating diagonal with wavy on each row.

Then I did free motion seaweed in the borders. Yes, that is seaweed (cause I say so :) I envisioned seashells or seahorse; but I just could not make them happen. Seaweed it is.

There's a leftover row inserted in the back--yes, cool--but I actually ran short of the gray

How about the title?!

We're a Shore Thing.

It's true.

We love the sea. It's our history.

More naps than body surfing these days.

but that's OK.

Bloggers' Quilt Festival!

I'm so tickled to be a part of this year's Bloggers' Quilt Festival ! My entry was done in Outer Mongolia (literally! --read on). This quilt is one of my favorite recent projects that I named "Renegade Geisha's" --renegade because two of the geisha's don't conform to the rest (mainly because I ran out of coordinating fabrics!). Can you find the two renegades? ;) The quilt incorporates fabric origami and the quilt itself is from Fantastic Fabric Folding --many projects from this book were a big hit with the Mongolian class pictured below. Due to my husband's work, we live in Mongolia; and I was privileged to teach classes at a local quilting studio. I've included a picture of the class where we were working on the geisha blocks. The students spoke almost no English and I speak what I call Monglish--a lot of English sprinkled with Mongolian. Regardless, we all had a blast! ...and, I'm very pleased with this quilt o...

Mental Rioting

Mental Rioting. Isn't that the coolest phrase? I just heard it minutes ago on a Nat Geo bio on Darwin. Thought it summed up a lot for me today. All good. Except for the head cold I'm getting over. A glorious fall day is outside and I've been cooped up trying to mend. Respiratory infections are not to be taken lightly here in UB. The good news is that I was able to snuffle about and cut out 4--count them: 4! sewing projects today. Very excited about them. Oh, and the really, really good news is that Mr. M indeed fixed my serger. The same day. He's a keeper. Before the cold hit, it hasn't all been sewing here. I started helping out with conversational English with bright young people working in Mongolian government who are trying to get to Australia to work on Master degrees. A Stitch Sisters Kimono for Dubai

My husband had meetings come up quick in Dubai and of course I tagged along! We were going to be there a week and I wanted a lightweight kimono-type pullover for the pool and getting out of the shower. I had snagged a gorgeous white linen/cotton (guessing on this) here in UB that was perfect. My inspiration came from Lisa's over at Lisa's Carolina | Handmade . I'm not good at pattern drafting and this was a quick FREE measure and cut tutorial of Stitch Sisters--find their Patternless Pattern Link here . I'm so happy with this! It basically took me an afternoon. The directions are great--and they include 5/8" seam allowances--yay!--as I wanted to turn under and top stitch them since I don't have a serger here. I left off the ties. Shapeless worked for this. I also raised the neckline by about 1.5" The neckline was a little trickier as I didn't have any bias on hand and there is no "running out" anywhe...
