Fabric Finds!

Things are a changing here in UB--my hole-in-the-wall shop is now importing from Korea and Russia where once there were only bolts of shiny silk-esque (polyester), now the place is crammed, floor-to-ceiling with rolls of all kinds of knits, velours, shirtings AND wools--even cashmere wools! etc. Good cottons have yet to arrive--and the thin, scratchy Hello Kitty stuff used for bedding (ouch!) does not count.

Anyway, check out my purchases--the knits were about $4 a meter and the gray wool $10 a meter and the lavender one that I'm sure is cashmere was only $12 a meter. I'm happy.

Spring Stuff

Yes, here in UB we are in the midst of the usual Deep Freeze (walked to a women's meeting and to pick up dry cleaning today in -20), but I am trying to be a bit proactive regarding spring--not natural for me, being proactive. Maybe it has to do with the trip to Calif in February that Randy & I are planning. Maybe a realization that the Hibernation Mode we've been in for the past 3 weeks is coming to an end: 3 new Wagner families/couples arriving this week, meeting up with acquaintances today at the IWAM meeting resulting in meetings next week, social engagements for the upcoming Friday & Saturday nights, Randy traveling next week. Sigh. All welcome, but, well, sigh. Enough said!

This is what's going on in my little sewing corner here:

Some receiving blankets for the maternity hospital made from a heap of flannel given to me by dear Rose Marie back in my home church. Flannel here is scarce and really rough and scratchy in bizarre prints. Babies born here to poor moms are sent home in newspaper. No lie. So, this is an ongoing project of IWAM's here and gals from all over the world contribute knitting, sewing, etc. I could only fit so much in this last suitcase, so more to come from that heap of flannel back home.

This is a quilted wall hanging for our bedroom here that redone last spring in carmel and browns. I actually HAND APPLIQUED this! Unheard of for me. ...but you know, I actually really enjoyed it while listening to sewing podcasts :)

I just didn't want the machine-done blanket stitch on the project--especially the slender stems. Also, sewing it by hand gave me more control. However, the rest will be done on the machine! I'm assuming a good pressing will eliminate the lumps and bumps :)

The pattern came from a Stitch Magazine--which I don't have the issue # as I just tore out the pattern to bring here...back to that Loaded Luggage thing. I think it was from spring or summer 2010.

Look at this! I asked Randy to take me to a "fabric store" here in UB--a cramped hole-in-the-wall place crammed floor-to-ceiling with fabrics of all description--as well has local shoppers. No price tags--"hid wey?" How much? ...and you're told how much for 1 metre--I paid roughly $10 a metre. It's wool and has a beautiful hand. Perfect for a jacket/coat for next fall and winter.

It's all textured on the outside and super soft on the inside.

I plan on going back this week to snag some amazing cashmere silk suiting. Go ahead: fabric envy.

How wierd to think of taking fabric back that way for once!

Speaking of Fabric Envy--check out this sight: Fashion Fabrics Club I heard about it on SewForthNow Sew Forth Now podcast today. I know that I may be the last one on the planet to find this sight, but I will definitely be buying fabric before the sale ends on the 23rd! Wow. Come to think of it, I'll be heading back to the US on the 21st. Hmm, better get on it!

Looking ahead, here are my spring pics for patterns--not too taken with either Simp or Vogue, but really like McCalls looks and their website.

Embracing 2012

I am SO looking forward to the new year! Partly due to the plans I have for it and partly due to the dose of Acceptance God has graced me with. Acceptance of this unconventional life Randy & I are living and even making friends with the challenges that come with it.

Last year my Word was Peace. I really think I grew in this area--as always, the spiritual affects our whole being.

After some consideration, my word for this year is

Grace.

Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus

2 Tim 2:1

A certain relationship in my life has exposed my lack in this area. While I have come so far in learning about and experiencing God's grace to me, I really need to practice it horizontally. I think this relationship will be excellent training.

Other goals I have for the coming year are:

Learning about finances.

While I handle a large portion of our living expenses; insurance; property taxes; etc., I want to get a grip on the Bigger Picture.

Do something with the "guest" room (ha!) in the basement.

This will involve a major clean out, paint, etc.

Anything and everything would be an improvement :)

Read through the Bible.

I try to do this every other year and I really like the programs offered through the Navigators (free:)

Reduce/alter my usual maniacal routine of leaving the US for Asia--especially since this year promises to hold even more travel.

Massage in Incheon Airport is just not enough.

Perhaps hiring help?!

Eat less and yoga even more.

Sew!

My passion for sewing has returned full force since having an actual sewing room again in Colorado. I have a sewing corner here in UB, but very limited access to fabric, patterns, etc.--but this can be overcome with planning, right?

so...

I want to:

Plot my wardrobe needs before the actual season arrives--wow!

Continue teaching Hannah to sew

(and any of my other granddaughters who show interest!)

Take some classes!
Join a sewing group/organization!

Try some online fabric ordering

That's it. That's enough! I met about half of last year's goals. The other half morphed into other things; for instance instead of learning more Mongolian, I learned the language of Apple. OK, there were a few that didn't even come close. So it goes; life!

To the future!

One Last Look

...Back. This is the last day of the year on this side of the world and before I turn the calendar to a new year, I want to just blog about Stuff I've Made. Despite all the Travel, Crazy Schedules and Family Fun, I really did get a lot of sewing done. In fact, I have a renewed interest in garment sewing for myself--partly due to inspiration from all the sewing blogs and podcasts out there (and Nikki!) and partly because of the joy of my sewing loft in Colorado where the views and light are great and all my stuff is organized.

First there were the Christmas jammies for the Munchkins. I ended up making them all except for Elijah's (Carters with Lego men were the ticket) and Andreas' (who is enjoying a glut of jammies and for whom I crotchet a monster hat and strings for store bought mittens).

Kelby also had a plethora of jammies and Nikki suggested a little man robe. Done.

Then there were Personality Appropriate Aprons for my friend Maureen's b-day in December:

For myself, I made a few tunics to wear with my skinny jeans. Really like this one and hope to make again--being short, it comes to mid thigh on me. Just what I wanted.

This one below looks MUCHO better on than on the form. For one, the print is really, really muted; whereas, it's neon eye popping in this picture. Trust me, I would not wear this print the way it looks in the picture! Secondly, it is longer and drap-ier on; in fact, I made a note to make a size smaller next time. Come to think of it, maybe I should re-measure my form as it seems really snug on the form, hip level (yippee!). I wear this with a thin, close fitting long sleeved tee and like it a lot. Oh, and it has pleats at one shoulder and on one lower side that I don't think show up in the picture, either.

And this great jacket from a velvet(ish) fabric. I plan on wearing a close fitting black turtleneck shot through with silver that I have under. ...and with my black dress pants from Express, festive, eh?

Lastly, I whipped up two of these earbud pouches, one for my fancy ones with the microphone that came with my iPhone, and the other for my everyday iPod ones. As you can see, I goofed on the one by not placing the ring tab at the start of the zipper. Oh well, no biggie. I had to use an invisible zipper as that's all you can get here in UB. ? Don't know. Anyway, I really like them! Beats the snak zips I've been using when I travel.

That's it. I'm thinking, admittedly not too hard, about starting a separate sewing blog to talk about my sewing in more detail and so as to not bore to tears those of you have no interest whatsoever. I would name it Nomad Needles (?!) and would use this picture in the header:

Isn't this GREAT?! My friend, Pernille, sent this to me for my birthday! The body has pattern pieces decoupaged on it! How cool is that? Love it.

One definite goal for blogging in 2012 is to do it more often and less bulk. By doing the first, that should take care of the second, right?

Au revoir 2011! Tomorrow is the time for calendars and goals and embracing a brand new year. Tonight, well, Randy is in the kitchen building the most amazing lasagna and there is a bottle of dry champagne chilling. So, off to it!

Before I left that side of the world, three generations of Myers--now extended to Alexanders and Schreiners--gathered at Jana's in Richland, WA. To have ALL of us together, with Randy (who flew in the reaaallly long route from Mongolia), was the first time in over 7 years. Granted, we've multiplied a wee bit since then, so the dynamics of ALL have changed; but still, a major feat. A Grand Time was had by all and so without further wordiness, here are the pictures!

Let's Just Stop

...and give thanks! Despite failed budgets, the Euro tanking, and Egypt & Syria in, in, words fail.
...and of course, Black Friday roaring toward us like a train (wreck?!). Yikes!

In the midst of mayhem and marketing, I will be thankful--I choose to be thankful!

-for the fact that God is sovereign and over all--my convoluted circumstances as well as the global turmoil

-for family that's healthy, happy, employed, and walking with the Lord

-for friends old and new, near and far

-for my church family spread all over the world

-for the pleasures and comforts of home(s)

-for beauty that God has created, or allowed man to, simply for it's own beauty

-for being able to do something just for the joy of it--like sewing!

-AND that all things Christmas were dropped off at the post office today!!!! Yes! Yay!

I must muse. Yesterday my devotional scripture was in Matthew 6 and vs 25 really struck me:

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

then 33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,

Wow. It occurred to me that Jesus wasn't just talking about dealing with perspective during lean times; in fact, isn't it even easier to worry about this stuff during times of abundance? I find it so. Blessed with so much, sometimes it's all so worrisome and consuming.

Supreme Granny Moments

As anybody who blogs knows, sometimes life just gets too busy to blog. ...but recent Granny experiences have been too precious to let get by! So, first, a peek back at the time I got to share with my Munchkins in WA state when I first flew back to the US in early October. I got to tag-team grandparent with the other granny, a.k.a, Grammy, while Ben & Jana went gallivanting off to Presbytery in Minnesota. We had a high old time during that week. I actually think that jet lag only enhanced the experience! Fun, fun, fun! Especially the part when Lauren asked for a glass of wine at week's end and the Parent Units were on their way home :D

Next, I'll blog about the the first Spend-the-Night-at-Granny's this last weekend. Stay tuned!

OH!!! AND I had the priviledge to get Hannah started sewing!! Grand success!

We rejoiced to have Mom back. Lots :)

Last night we had a grand time at our church Harvest Party--I went as Super Granny :) and helped out with the cake walk. Being SG, we used an iPod for the cake walk music, amazing many older celebrants ;) However, I'm sure many of us will have Laura Corlin's version of Grandma's Feather Bed on a continuous brain loop for days and days!

The Fam in Finery --in case you had to ask, as I did, Casey is 3-Punch Chuck from The Office, I think--hope I got that right! OK, SG is not so very Pop Culture Savvy ;)

What A Difference A Day Makes

Ya gotta love Colorado--and I do! Monday was 80 degrees; Tuesday, as in yesterday, started out sunny and mild. The Munchkins were over and we went out to collect pine cones...

Then, last night it was looking like this...OK, a little brr...

This morning...hello! We had a high of 30 or so and it snowed off & on all day. A snow day! Yeah!

Heaven & Home

Since my last blog I have returned to UB from Italy, helped to celebrate Wagner Asia Equipment's 15th anniversary in Mongolia, returned to the US to help the other Granny with Jana's 5 Munchkins in WA State, and then home. Yep, I have been on a flight every 2 weeks since August 9--all international except the last from WA State to Colorado!

Home. All of the above was wonderful and I do plan to blog the rest of our Adriatic trip, the anniversary, and my Granny/Grammy time...but first about this homecoming. After all the travel combined with the painting, carpeting, etc., of the last 2 years, this homecoming was the one I've anticipated for so long: the opening of the door and the "ahhhh" feeling. I was not disappointed! I spent the first 48 hours in constant delight. In fact, heaven itself seems a bit more real; maybe "real" isn't the right word; but the prospect of heaven seems to have taken on a whole new sparkle! If an earthly homecoming can be this wonderful, what must getting to heaven be like?!

...and, after changing out'ed light bulbs, wading through 47 messages on the answering machine, a diaper box full of mail (!), getting the Super TV working again, clearing the garage of leaves, and tending what is left growing on the patio; I did a Very Important Thing: reloaded the cookie jar! Since Animal Cookies don't have much sugar, I indulge Nikki's Munchkins every chance I get :)

Today I put together a few fall things from a piece of pre-quilted fabric I think I've had for 10 years. My fall quilts are in UB, so these will do nicely once I finish the binding

Bari, Bari Cool

Port #3 was into Bari, Italy which is 2nd only to Naples in economic importance to Italy. It's also a university town as well as an ancient port city. We stuck to the old quarter, wandering around until we found the Castello Svevo --castles and palm trees: how cool is that?? The castle was built around 1100, burned and was rebuilt a bit later that century; it's old, no?

Meandering through the medieval streets I was again struck by the marriage of the ancient with the working modern and I caught these:

Ravenna Rave

Cruise Day 2 we woke up in Ravenna, Italy to this view:

Ravenna has a crazy quilt history dating back to the Etruscans who settled it Long-Long-Ago-BC--it was accepted into the Roman Republic back in 49BC! It's architecture reflects Byzantine, Ostrogoth, Venetian and Roman occupants over the centuries. Ravenna with the most outstanding mosaics in the world. Lots of biggies of history came through here.

The day was overcast so a bit cooler. Using internet info as a guide, we set off on our own walking tour. Amazing stuff. I'm afraid my little Sony camera didn't do it justice--so you really must come see all this for yourself!

Note: whenever you think you're seeing a fresco/painting; you're not. Absolutely everything was done in mosaic.

The Basilica of San Vitale--1500 years old--you can tell my looking at the people inside the scale of this place:

Check out the split and mirrored marble column on the right--the place was full of them. Belissimo!

We finished up our day in Ravenna by exploring piazzas and side streets, eating a great lunch with locals, and making a detour to a local beach by the port. Our feet said grazie!

Slovenia & Stallions

On Sunday we sailed away from Venice...

See the two vaporetti water buses I was talking about? They have the orange stripes at the top.

...and we awoke to these stunning views of Koper, Slovenia, from our stateroom balcony!

I had read that the city of Koper pretty much closes down on Sunday, the day we arrived; and Randy really wanted to see the stud farm of the famous Lippizan stallions. So, we joined the tour group the ship was offering and off we went on a 45-minute bus ride into the fall scenery of the Slovenian countryside. There was a guide on the bus who filled us in on tons of interesting Slovenian factoids. I have to admit that this tour would not have been on my radar screen (even though my mom had taken me to a performance of the Dancing Lippizans for my 16th birthday)--I thoroughly enjoyed it! Once again, hooray for the spice of spousal differences :D

This stable was built at the end of the 15th century!

This particular sight of Lipican had been breeding these special horses since around 1400. The grounds were beautiful! We enjoyed a tour of the stables, a museum tour and a special performance--they really do dance!

I did not know that these beautiful horses are all born dark and gradually turn white as they mature. Amazing!

On the way back to Koper, we were treated to a tour of a great winery--and tasting ;). Slovenia has an ancient wine industry. Who knew? Check out this realllly old olive tree outside--not quite as ancient as the ones we saw in Israel, but still impressive

When we got back on ship, we were greeted by this CUTE elephant created by Aldrin, our stateroom attendant! Ciao for Now :D

The Clampets Do Italy

...and Croatia! ...and Slovenia! Yep, they actually allowed Randy & I into each of those countries. Amazing. Do you think immigration realized I graduated from Kern (aka Korn) Valley High in a class of 99 people??

We just returned (into UB at 6 am after 2 Aeroflot flights; bleck) from 12 days away--7 days spent on a GIGANTIC cruise ship--and an extra 3 days in Venice :) . The last 2 full days spent in airports and on flights.

We were gobsmacked the entire trip. What struck me most about Venice was that people actually live in the midst of all this antiquity and beauty. Be forewarned; I'm planning to blog this trip in installments.

Venice rocks! We got there after exactly 24 hours of travel (10 hours in Moscow airport--double bleck) and armed with this amazing book that is now totally dogeared and gelato stained:

SO much better than Lonely Planet (and lighter, too). I got one for Croatia, too.

The hotel in Mastre sold us tickets for the local bus into Venezia (note: the Desk Dudes were SO Italian and SO adorable!) I took this pic thinking the bus was crowded--ha! Shortly after this, it got so crowded that all I could see was Randy's butt (he was standing, wedged into safety)

Then, we got a day pass to the vaporetti, the local water bus that runs around the canals. Those were super crowded.

bummer...I'm a euro short...

We saw some amazing sights--angels in the architecture!

....really...the food was good, here, too ;)

made new friends--kept running into these 2 sisters who we met at the bus stop that morning. They were hunting down a Dali exhibit--that they actually found!. We agreed to share a taxi to the port the next morning as they were sailing, too, though on a different ship.

Sew Fly Sew

Before I checked off these crazy Get-Out-of-Dodge lists--and lived to tell about it :) and packed my bags for Mongolia, (you know, I'm not really a list person, but I simply forget too much important stuff without them)

I managed to stitch up a few things in Colorado like...

Pillow cases for Kelby's birthday when he got his big boy bed...

and two dresses that I'm reaallly hoping will fit Abby on her September birthday

This Kwik Sew was my 1st experience with downloading a pattern. Pretty slick! Plus, I won't have to dink around with the different kids' sizes by re-buying or tracing. Just print it off again (in fast draft)!

This was an attempt to duplicate a much pricier dress. I was really pleased with the pattern and detailing. I finally figured out how to accomplish decent threaded button loops! Instead of crotchet thread, which is too thick to initially get through the fabric, I used 4 strands of regular thread and crotchet my loop then pulled through to knot with the needle. Pat on back :) These fabrics were beautiful cottons from Hobby Lobby--the picture doesn't do them justice.

and of course, a doll dress to match for her 18" doll :)

Once here in UB, I was inspired to download this pattern

to make this skirt

from a cotton sari length I had bought in Singapore a few years back. They wash up beautifully! Soft with nice drape. AND I remember paying less than 5 USD for it :D Yes, I bought a stack for gifts, table covers, etc. I probably should have done a wrap skirt to do justice with the print's sari layout, but I'm really picky about wraps--no surprises in the wind, you know? I couldn't seem to find a mock wrap, so it is what it is. This one is fairly straight with darts, side zip and side slit. I wore it out last night and like it lots.

Well, off into the day. Need to start thinking about packing--Venice by the end of the week--God willing and Aeroflot flies! Ciao!

2 Eyes 2 Views 2 Worlds

When I left Colorado, things on the patio were blooming, my favorite tree had just enjoyed a "manicure" and was full of squirrels & birds, and I usually spotted a bunny or two on the way to the mailbox...

My herbs! Asian Basil, rosemary, thyme & oregano--yesss!

and the Munchkins loved going on nature walks to gather goodies--some of which obviously make for good snaking :)

Fast forward to my views here in UB on the way to the store. In Colorado, I walk for pleasure and walking with a purpose; i.e, errands, is challenging. Here in UB it's just the opposite! The lack of sidewalks, car fumes and coal dust don't add much pleasure. However, the traffic makes walking preferable, weather permitting. Anyway, what I find so fascinating is the rapid change here and the contrast between prosperity/poverty and the modern/primitive. The way of the world, I suppose, but so in-your-face here.

Before I left the US last week for Mongolia, the Munchkins and I had a few more rounds in the pool. I'm SO glad we did that; not only for the sheer fun of it and the memories, but also because summer seems to have passed UB by. The last week we've seen a few 80's, but mostly cool & cloudy with some rain mixed in.

These were taken the week before Natalie, Layla & Kelby started swim lessons. So, since I am unable to teach them to swim (ahem), I did share some other useful pool skills like snorting water through the noodles, clinging to the side without floaties, and riding one's noodle pretending to be a seahorse :D The Other Granny and I were tag teaming while Nikki & Casey were off honeymooning, so it worked out great to whisk the girlsies off to swim while Kelby napped--hence his absence from this set. We're thinking next year I can solo with all 3 in the pool at once.

When I left, the pool would only be open about 3 more weeks, so I got my HOA $ out of it for sure this summer. Almost every evening after dinner I would go over and noodle to cool off and enjoying the sunset, the birds and the dragon flies. Nice.

Last weekend I tagged along with Nikki's family to the Renaissance Fair in Larkspur, Colorado. Randy & I had talked about going for the 28 years we've been in Colorado. I'm so glad I went--great fun, good memories made, and I can now check that completely off my Life List. I assured Randy I went for both of us. It was crazy hot and the crowd was so, umm, colorful. Sort of like, the Bandemere Biker Bunch kicked it up a notch and came as pirates and wenches, complete with leathers and tats. We didn't exactly have the Shakespearean experience Jana's family enjoyed in Washington State.

Puke & Snot turned out to be a very off color "comedy." Nikki exited with the kids and I stayed with the stroller, which we could not get out of the crowd with. Yep, I got to enjoy the whole thing.

Seriously...would Will have endorsed a parade featuring big turkey legs and sausages? Maybe.

Do fairies really use ATMs? ....other questions come to mind as well...

Still, the place ranneth over with princesses along with little knights wielding swords to protect the princesses.

I just got back from an amazing trip to Canada--to meet up with 2 amazing soul sisters I met in Mongolia. How amazing is that? eh? :) We made up the same threesome last year at Lianne's in Pennsylvania. This year Nancy played hostess in Ontario.

Nancy whisked us from the Toronto airport to a wonderful barbecue with 2 of her sisters and family, then on to her lake house--where we talked until 1, slept until 10, had breakfast/brunch/lunch around noon--in our jammies, outside, right by the lake. Yep. Big time in a large way.

Then, back through Toronto

to Nancy's home in Burlington. After church on Sunday, we were treated to more of Nancy's family AND her mother, Connie's, World Famous Butterscotch Pie....yumms! Family members actually fight over this pie and hide the leftover pieces from each other in cupboards, in bookshelves...must be a Canadian thing...eh?

Our last day there we day tripped over to the Canadian side of Niagra Falls, and yes, the view from their side is crazy amazing! We topped the day off with a stop at the historic village of Niagra on the Lake (OK, seems we Americans burned it to the ground in 1813--but we've since tried to reconcile by buying tons of maple syrup every year :) We strolled. We shopped. We dined. ...and sweated a whole lot...

We stopped for a quiet moment by the shores of Lake Ontario before heading back home (we look like really soggy tourists :)

I loved every moment spent with Nancy & Lianne (minus a few crazy-hot nights :) and loved my first experience in Canada! This trip was good for the body, good for the mind, and certainly good for the spirit.

Catching Up on Looking Back

(more) Swimming & Sewing

Actually, this week's blog will be similar to last week's...Swimming & Sewing. I think that summer has actually sunk into my psyche. I did manage to slow things down a bit last week. Then the heat hit and slowed me down even more. Yep, I could get used to taking things slow. I should be sitting on my new porch swing mouth breathing by mid July--when I'll have to come out of my Summer Stupor in order to start traveling again.

...in the meantime...

Last week friends from church came over for an Origami Night. Kazumi, our sister of Japanese descent and resident origami expert, endeavored :) to teach us one of the most basic shapes. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to take any group pics, but here's a few of the products of our hard labors. Mine is the big orange one with, um, personality. This is not my medium. --but we had a lot of fun! I wish I would have captured all of them on film before they started flying home :) There was quite a flock!

Then, there was the siren call of the pool...

Then, from the Sewing (Therapy) Loft...I'm having a lot of fun sewing garments...for myself :) ...and to have them fit, etc.--very gratifying! It's been interesting to explore why the garments are pleasing. One, a lot has to do with the fabric--at 54, fabric is my Friend. Hides a multitude of sins ;) --but I also need light, fluid fabrics and a fit that skims, not hugs. Which brings me to a Ponderance Two. Is it just me or did there used to be a pattern section for "Mrs."? I remember this from when I was very young--a whole section of patterns for, what they called back then, the Matronly. Believe me, a C cup at 54 years old is NOT the same as a C cup on a 20 or 30 year old. Sigh. I just might pursue this with the pattern companies. Stay tuned.

Tips gleaned these days mostly seem to come from my wonderful daughters. Nikki recently passed on the tip of using a walking foot with knits. Magic!

I sewed this tunic top up from a really light and soft knit from Denver Fabric's bargain bins. I'm really pleased with the fit and feel; very flattering.

Then I finished up this blue sweater; again, very light, soft & drape-y knit. Taking a tip from Nikki, I doubled the collar/scarf piece width and sewed as one piece to avoid hemming a bias edge. Very pleased with this one, too!

Pursuing Peace

This is where I start my days--however, this past week's stops
here were way too brief and left me hungry & thirsty

Life here in the US can be so...distracting! There are so many cool things to do and see and pursue and acquire and...it can leave me tired, frazzled and wondering where my peace is hiding out--and PEACE is my word-for-the-year! God has been reminding me of that. He's like that. Scripture commands us to "seek peace and pursue it ( 1 Peter 3:11 )--not run the other way. Admittedly, scripture also makes a distinction between times when we are called to run and when we are to walk (Is 40:31 for one) --balanced with times of being still and resting by those still waters. The last few days I have heard the Lord distinctly instructing me to "Stop, already!" There are several decisions I have to make and I so need His wisdom--and to receive that I must take the time to hear His heart. In addition, several ministry opportunities of an international nature have come up and it would be so easy to just say "yes!" as these really get me excited. The stark reality is that I have finite resources of time, energy and money--and I would not want to place undue stress on my precious relationships. I must know His will. I must stop and listen. That means controlling the coming and going as well as input; meaning the chatter that is so constant here. I really like NPR and Netflix and my iPod! ...but what I need is some silence.

Plus, I feel the need just to hang out--enjoy summer here and luxuriate in some unstructured time. Big challenge for me. So, this coming week I have 3 commitments falling within 1 1/2 days. The rest I am leaving open. Wide open. Then I need to figure out how to squeeze in a visit to the Munchkins in WA state ;)

OK, Despite being a bit too busy lately, I have managed to squeeze in Munchkin time and some sewing :D

Sewing clothes! It's been a very long time; but a trip to Denver Fabrics with Nikki was just what I needed to kick start my creativity in this area (their bargain bins are amazing!). Having everything in one place and in order didn't hurt either. This sweater I had actually started about 3 years ago. It's light and drapey and I'm very pleased with it!

This is a pool dress--a swimsuit cover-up. The flowers are way bigger than I normally choose, but the fabric is a really light washable linen and I like it a lot.

I am aiming to blog at the end of each week--with no guilt attached if I don't, of course--life's too precious for that ;) ....but it is a goal. I thought of naming it something to do with Friday--but too much pressure, there; after all, the weekend can be 3-4 days! I am still fighting the Mac/Picasa-PC thing. Ideally, I should be able to upload (or is it download...hmm...) pics from iPhoto to Picasa Web albums which are so much more blogger-friendly. Alas, all tips and guides online have not worked out. I guess a trip to see my peeps at the Apple store is in my near future. Anyway, without further ado, here's a bit (the fun bits) of my week in review:

Quiet But Not Idle

I haven't blogged in a bit--not because I haven't wanted to--I'm going to blame it on this new beauty:

Yep. I crossed over to Mac Land and am really enjoying it. For the most part, the transition has been painless. Except for the photo thing--which is a big thing for me. So, from Picasa to iPhoto and flikr. Challenging, but I'm determined!

Aside from Mac classes, I've been busy with lots of other stuff, too!

....like the Munchkins...

...and gardening (even my new herb garden is thriving!

oh, and we got new carpet--! This after the floors were sanded to look like new. Beautiful and worth all the upheaval.

...and then there's the Some Assembly Required Projects. Not so fun, but worth the effort.

...then I've tried to spend lots of time in my tree top sewing loft :D This project was for Julia, who just turned 4. I forgot to take a picture of all the little clothes I attached to fusible fleece; then Randy & I cut out heaps of little hats, dresses, shoes, etc.--it was all so cute and a big hit with the birthday girl, too. I've also been sewing some things for the house--also fun :)

Last, but not least, Nikki & I joined a benefit walk for Alternative Pregnancy Center where I volunteer one or two times a week. Unfortunately, the gentlemen who I asked to take what would have been a great shot of Nikki & I underneath the banner; well, they came out completely white. ??? So, all I have is this butt shot taken while trying to get this cute little dog. Anyway, the event was fun and successful--around 1,000 showed up to walk!

Whew! Done! I blogged at last. I gotta say, this was not as easy as with Picasa. Surely there must be a way to download more than one picture at a time!?

How so? Randy's recent home leave of 2 weeks was chock full of family time--and so very intentional--leaving me blessed with 1) God's goodness displayed in and through our wonderful family 2) the grand time we had in the moment and 3) the memories I'm left with!

This blog is a wee bit late and I can blame it on this beautiful new baby:

Yes, I have crossed over into Mac land and am infatuated with this little (and super light) Mac Book Air. However, we are still bonding; and while I've adapted great with email, general navigation, etc., transferring pictures and such has been a bit more challenging. Good thing I signed up for classes, eh?

Ahh...

As wonderful as the last 5 weeks have been (OK, excluding the Nomad Adventure of choosing paint, wallpaper, etc., --twice--and packing up COMPLETELY the apartment in UB for remodeling--being with Randy was great despite all that ;) I am ready for some serious downtime. As in lots of quiet interspersed with loud music, sleep, and, well, solitude. Just enough to catch my breath. Not that I would ever trade time with Randy--he is the ultimate "back door company," you know?

The 2 weeks of Randy's home leave were wonderful. Chock full of family and each other. Every moment intentional. Every moment wonderful.

I took Randy to the the airport at 5 am this morning. Sigh. Alone again. Sigh. What's a gal to do? Take a walk around the lake. Have an absolutely quiet quiet time. Whip through some housework. Make appointments for hair and manicure/pedicure for today, hello:) Buy a ton of annuals. Appreciate all the eye popping green around me. Grill some fish and veggies. Watch a chick flick. Yes!!

Assembly Line Granny

I've been sorting through my digital pictures (7 years worth!!) lately and it tickled me how my holiday and just-because notes and gifts for my Munchkins have went from a few to 8 within those 7 years (! ) resulting in quite the assembly line of giving. After all, I couldn't do for just 1 and not all 8 for goodness sake. Here's some pictures of just a few projects--without the countless fun pillowcases I make most every year and the set of Bitty Baby clothes for each granddaughter when she turns 2 (receiving the Bitty Baby when she turned 1). Before I leave the US in the fall, I always have books and jammies/nighties sewn or purchased for Christmas; but still, we like to send cards and icecream $ to mark all the holidays :)

On the Road Again

...or, in my case, in the air again.

Re-entry into UB was a bit bumpy this time--the jet lag hit me up the side of the head. The result: I spent about 2 days as a giant Whine-y Butt. Yuk. Poor Randy. Now, it could be due to the fact I've been on 6 international flights and one domestic within the last 3 1/2 months. It's worked out to every 3 weeks within that time--plus one Mongolia-US trip on the horizon in, yes, 3 weeks! Still, no excuse for sin, hmm?

Stars or Bars? Randy says perception is reality. Do I whine and complain about the stresses and strains of this kind of travel/life or do I embrace the incredible adventures I've had for the last 7 years? My choice.

All that said and out of the way...here's some things that make me smile:

My travel buddies--my Travel Pro Walk About (#2 for me--my 1st just plain wore out. I gave it to Randy :). This is technically a carry on--but I just don't. However, it holds enough to keep me for a month, fits in Asian taxis and almost under the bed when empty. My real carry on is a little Travel Pro. It holds my laptop, the dreaded ziplock of liquids, 2 changes of tops and underwear, chargers, etc. This is a REAL carry on because it will fit under the seat with that stupid box that takes up half the foot room on some planes plus leaves room for my feet. Don't ask me how I know this--trust that experience is talking here. Letting the airline check it for you often results in the carry on going somewhere that you are not. Lastly, my Daytimer flight bag. Very compartmentalized. We have traveled together so much that I know where everything is long after the brain cells have turned to mush on 30-hour trips. Boarding passes. Passport. Hand lotion. iPod. Phone. Snaks. All in the same place all the time. Plus, it sits upright and snug under the seat. No slouching, no digging.

Next favorite travel aid: these expandable mesh bags. I usually take 2; one for chargers, camera, etc. and one for meds, nail polish, bandaides, and that sort of misc.

Lastly: Ziplocks. Ziplocks have to be the Number 1 travel necessity. All sizes, from snack size to gallon. I put each charger in their own to keep from getting tangled. Good for keeping fresh clothes smooth in my little carry on. Good for swimsuits wet from that one last dip in the ocean before leaving for the airport. Good for make up. Good for lots and lots of stuff.

Then, there are some things here in UB that I appreciate lots:

This GREAT hair dryer I got in Singapore 4 or 5 years ago. It has 3 speeds, the ion thing--and it's quiet! --Unlike the one I have back in Colo that I use ear plugs with. Every morning.

This 15- (or more)-year old Maytag oven. We inherited this when Wagner remodled the kitchen at work (they feed all 400 employees a full lunch everyday!). There were 4 of them that blazed away every day until they were replaced by restaurant-sized stuff from Bejing. Anyway, this thing is right on the money temperature wise and it responds instantly. --and it's full size; unheard of in Asia and a lot of Europe. You know America--bigger is better :) and sometimes it really is. The little Russian "cooker" I had when I first got here wouldn't even accommodate a 9x13 pan.

My trusty Pfaff 1475. She is 18 years old and besides all the standard clothing and household projects, has sewn 2 bridal gowns, umpteen bridesmaid dresses and too many baby quilts to count. All that and she still purrs. Compared to my top-of-the-line Kenmore in Colorado, she's the Lincoln compared to a really good Ford. A bit of luxury is hard to come by here in Mongolia, and I so enjoy this machine. She makes me smile.

...and oh, yeah--Randy is my most favorite thing in Mongolia. He makes me smile and laugh and keeps me grounded. (No, that is not Mongolia in the background)

Whew! Quite the wordy blog. Well, time to be off into the markets and put my Monglish language skills to use :) Bayarla!

Tree Top Update

Just when I thought my sewing space in the loft was perfectly brilliant--the beautiful trees, the birds, the clouds--I improved upon it! We had a boat anchor in the basement: an absolutely HUGE desk we bought at Costco 10 years ago (isn't everything huge at Costco?) that I have tried to give away for a year. It simply would not fit in any interested party's space --and I don't do Craig's List because of the Strangers in My House Thing. ...but I kept thinking it would make an amazing sewing space, but got arguments from all.

Well, recently, I asked my son-in-law and his dad to help me move it up 2 flights of stairs and assemble it. (OK, I mostly watched and carried up the small parts.) They graciously obliged (with minimal grunting and Christian cussin' :)...and, yes! It is amazing! We scooted the Mongolian ger furniture around and here are the results:

I recently made a quick trip to Spokane to see Jana & Ben and Hannah and Abby and Elijah and Julia and Andreas :) It's taken much longer to blog this than intended as I brought home more than hugs and kisses: sniffles and sneezes. I really think I'm becoming allergic to flying.

Anyway, the day after I landed was Grandparent's Day and Elijah invited me to his special program at school where I got to see his class and everything. We enjoyed a yummy lunch afterward. The whole weekend was grand: we worked on (and finished!) a great puzzle, watched "Nanny McPhee Returns" (with popcorn) and Julia treated me to an impromptu Irish step dance--though she insisted on wearing her new shoes, which cramped her twinkle toes a bit. Oh! ...and we had a Girl's Day Out and went shopping for complete Easter outfits: dresses, shoes, hats, the works. Followed by lunch of course. --Repeated with the Girlsies in Denver :D

Natalie Turns Six

We just finished celebrating Natalie's 6th birthday--beginning with the family dinner on her actual birthday and ending with a bash with peers at the local ice skating rink (Natalie loved skating, Layla hated it, and Kelby went with me to scope out the hunky hockey dudes ;)

By the end of the weekend the family (the other grandparents came to town for the festivities) was pooped and I could see signs that Natalie's siblings were a bit done with Natalie's birthday. I think the pictures speak for themselves, so I'm going to let them:

My Dilemma

I am a nester. Always have been. I take such joy in creating Home. These days that drive centers around creating a space that is Calm & Clean & Colorful. I am currently finding much joy in feeling just a bit rooted--some predictability in routine and relationships. While sewing for one of my Munchkins (such a joy in itself!) I looked up in my sewing loft and saw an amazing skyline. Just another element of Home I do not take for granted. Notice the Nest perched in the tree :)

The dilemma? The Hearth and The Horizon. The siren call of the World. The Globe. The Foreign. I have always been a Traveler at heart. How can one be a Nester and a Traveler? Good question. My personal dilemma.

So, while happily sewing this evening, I was totally captivated by Rick Steve's episode on Croatia. SIGH. Croatia has been on my heart for 2 years (I know--most Americans say..."what?? where??). After tonight, God willing, I will go--even alone is OK--that's how strong the pull is. What I saw stopped my heart and made me put aside the sewing to watch (those close will know that this is big :). It was the same with Cambodia. And Israel. And Istanbul. Someone close recently commented that "National Geographic (on TV) was good enough." How????!!! One has to smell and hear and taste--there is absolutely no substitute for having one's feet ON the cobblestones. Thank You, Lord, for these experiences!!

Can you tell by the caps, underscores, etc., that there is a bit of Passion going on here? Yes, Passion. As I write this, Create station is running a spot on perennial plants--by a guy who is obviously passionate about his subject as well as his family history with perennials. While the topic doesn't really interest me, his passion does. Frankly, my husband's passion for his work in Mongolia turns me on. It, too, makes me catch my breath....and, frankly, it is the reward of this passion/work of his that has enabled me to indulge this passion for travel that I quietly longed for all my life --I have 25 years of clippings to prove it!--all the while busily and happily nesting.

The Hearth & the Horizon. The Dilemma. What's a girl to do? Apply for an expedited passport because hers is almost full after adding the legal limit of extra pages and she has a return ticket to Mongolia on April 5th and the love of her life is far & away on The Horizon.

That's the all-purpose greeting, toast, war cry, etc., in Fiji where Randy and I just met for a wonderful 10 days. 10-11 hours from LA and same from Seoul. Perfect! Except for the 10-11 hour flight, ugh, making a total of 20 hours of travel for me and more than that for Randy as he had to spend about 24 hours in Seoul before heading back to Mongolia. Enough whining! It was a glorious time. We snorkeled (and lunched on that itty bitty island that surely must disappear at high tide), we tried the local Kava served in wooden bowls, we para sailed (check out the 92-year-old champ who was with us--he got a standing ovation from our boat :), enjoyed amazing sunsets and sunrises--but mostly we did a lot of mouth breathing by the ocean and pools. ...and, I love palm trees almost as much as I do camels. They have a personality all their own and when they wave in the breeze I am always reminded of Isaiah 55:12

My Word

I keep coming across the concept of choosing one word to focus on for the coming year. For years I've chosen a theme or one particular scripture, but never just one Word. It was fun roping in all my goals and aspirations and boiling them down to one Word. After much thought...ta da! My word is:

I figured that my other pet words/ideas all fell under the umbrella of this one fruit of the Spirit that I desire so badly to embrace (embrace was actually one of my word wanna be's :) and exhibit. I want to experience Peace with my heavenly Father in all the ways He wants His children to. I want to experience it in all my relationships. I want to internalize it and have it materialize in my physical life. This is an excellent time of life to begin to cultivating peace.
To that end, I came across the following in a great book I read last year on the beatitudes:

A WOMAN OF PEACE

She has surrendered her life to God and she's not mad about it. She is learning to trust Him with the outcome and, even beyond trust, she anticipates that His plan will be more exciting and better than she could have imagined.
She tends the hearts of those she loves. Petty details decline in value. Love matters more.
She is beginning to see what counts for eternity and gives her attention accordingly.
She is interruptible.
She looks into the eyes of neighbors and strangers and the goofy friends of her kids and sees the person who wants to be loved and valued and applauded.
She understands that life doesn't always turn out right and people don't turn out right and just about everything needs to be covered with forgiveness.
She is slow to mumble stupid words of discouragement.
She considers when it is appropriate to become angry.
She is way past appearances and pretense.
She surrounds herself with passionate contentment.

I was so blessed by it (and supremely challenged!) that I've copied it, put it my Bible and try to read it every day.

...and, isn't this a great fabric? I bought it online a few months ago...premonition, hmm? God tapping me on the shoulder and winking? Anyway, I made an apron out of it :) as the kitchen is as good as anyplace to be at peace don't you think?

Slice of Heaven

A few days ago I returned home from running errands just as an afternoon snow storm was beginning. A mug of hot tea in hand, I headed upstairs to my evolving new sewing room in the loft--for the rest of the afternoon. Ahh...a foretaste of heaven! I have purposely left the windows curtain-less as they make me feel like I'm in a tree house--the views and light delight me no matter the time of day or the season. Every time I looked up from my sewing, I just smiled out loud.

So, I finished a baby gift of receiving blankets and bibs for a dear young friend...

and dug out some UFOs...
I started the binding for this table topper...
and laundered this black & red dresser topper for my bedroom...

and came across these happy birds that I had started last summer and plan to finish up into a runner...

Then, how about the traditional Mongolian ger furniture? I ordered some made back in UB and it came back with some of our other furniture and belongings last fall. It's a bit rough around the edges (hence the rubber bands holding the doors shut on the red piece), but isn't it fun? ...and, it does exactly what I wanted it to--store fabric, and ribbon, and patterns... I couldn't decide on a color, so I ordered one of each.

Last but not least, my real favorite of the sewing room--this dollhouse! Another generation is enjoying it (Randy made one for both Jana & Nikki :) and it just warms my heart (and keeps little hands busy, too :).

So, it is with a grateful heart that I enjoy all of the above.

Mahanaim

From my front window in Colorado

Mahanaim--it's a Hebrew word meaning Double Camp. What a journey I've traveled since this word, Mahanaim, came my way! This is a long blog, I know; and I have no idea if anyone will take the time to read it. However, I do need to write it.

From my front window in UB, Mongolia

A year ago I was agonizing over what I should do with myself and where in the world I should do it. I was frustrated. I am a nester at heart. My home in Colorado was soon to be empty what with my daughter and family moving into their own place and my husband was/is happily consumed with his work in Mongolia. Barb, a dear Aussie sister in Mongolia, looked at me during a verbal spew and said, "Well, it sounds like you just need to make two homes." Stunned silence. Of course! Bless you, Barb, wherever you are. Days later, I came across Mahanaim in Gen 32:2 --it seemed to reinforce Barb's counsel. Now, I am basically an either/or - all/or nothing person, so this idea was appealing yet scary. How God has stretched me way beyond this kind of thinking!

So, last summer I set to updating the house in Colorado. It was very consuming, very challenging; and very, very good for me in so many ways. After some furniture and belongings returned from Mongolia, I was on a plane back to Mongolia. Hmm. It seemed to be a law of nature that wherever my stuff was, I was somewhere else.

Fast forward to January, 2011. I am HOME. I'll still be doing lots of travel to meet up with Randy in Mongolia and other places, but my base will be here in Colorado. ...and I am enjoying a foretaste of what heaven surely must be in the form of home.

Is it the Stuff? Yes, but only in that there are so many memories and so much good family history in the things that have survived my many purges of the last 7 years. Before I went to Mongolia, I had accumulated waaay too much Stuff. Now what is left is Meaningful and/or Useful --or simply Beautiful--and I am enjoying it all with a grateful heart. Stuff is only important because of the people dear to us, past and present, who have used and enjoyed it--and continue to do so. I love it when my grandchildren make themselves at home here and that they are making memories here, too.

My Home and Heart now seem to reflect many places but especially the US and Mongolia. But you know what? Ultimately, my dwelling place is in the Lord--and I believe that He puts the longing for home in our hearts, wanting us to realize that our hearts are only at home in Him.

So, I am living in Mahanaim. In December we took a 2-week trip to Israel; and lo and behold, Mahanaim was mentioned in the guidebook--it's actually a place on the map! It was a reminder and confirmation to me. My home is certainly in 2 places; UB and Colorado. With lots of travel to places in between. I hope you will stay tuned for updates along the Scenic Route that God is guiding me along.

Goals & Growth

I don't really consider myself a List Person; though I do rely on them--as tools and not as task masters (big difference, there). For most of my adult life I have made New Year goals. Somewhere along the way I switched from making resolutions to setting goals. Much more flexible and forgiving. Goals are something I stretch and strive to accomplish--resolutions smack of should's, failure and guilt. Yuk. Who wants or needs more of that stuff?

This year's goals are very practical and totally submitted to my Father's good, acceptable and perfect will. The primary goal is Getting a Life. Sort of a big one. The last decade I have been very Reactive rather than Proactive. My life during this time has been very full and interesting; and, for the most part, satisfying. However, the last year or so has found me searching for purpose and meaning of my own ("let her own works praise her in the gates" Pr 31:31). Something to put my hands and heart into, something for which I was born to do. Finally I am excited about this and not frustrated. That in itself has been a journey.

Another major challenge involved Randy & I sitting down and deciding ahead of time (!!!!) our travel plans for the year. This, too, is huge for us as we tend to be Reactive as a couple. Yep, Reactive x 2. This is not serving us well at this place in our lives. We are patting ourselves on the backs for making major progress this holiday weekend. Hurray!

Other minor goals include things I'd like to learn about and/or improve on: my Mongolian language, classical music, free motion quilting, etc. Oh, and some new things to stretch and challenge me.

For kicks here' are my goals from last year:

2010: Life, Love & Laughter

I am so happy to see a new year roll around! Not that the old one was bad; but I sense a corner turned, a new chapter beginning. ...and I love new beginnings of any sort--even Mondays. The end of the old year and start of a new one has always held a special place for me. I much prefer to stay in and quiet, eat good food and be contemplative rather than take in parties or fireworks. What I loathe is starting a brand new year with a lack-of-sleep-hangover--no alcohol required. Yikes. --Not that I'm opposed to alcohol--but let's make it good stuff and imbibe early :)

In retrospect, some of the highs and lows of my 2010:

High: all the quality AND quantity time I got to spend with my daughters, sons-in-law and eight grand kids!

Low: all the time spent apart from Randy last year.

High: my trip to Cambodia by myself. Amazing and empowering.

Low: Working my way through the Hormonal Upheaval--thank you, Lord, Dr. B, & Lianne. The question still remains, though: was my life affecting my hormones or the other way around? I suppose the answer is both. Looking back from this shore, I'm OK with that.

High/Low: Nikki and family moving out of our Colorado home (low) in order to move into their own home (high) 10 minutes away from our home (double high :)

High: Reclaiming said home for two rather than 7.

Low: Dealing with contractors to achieve the above. Mercy. Truly a tale of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." I would list and rate them but I am afraid I would be sued. ...and, admittedly, there were stars. The Chappel's come to mind...:D "This is going to cost the owners more, but in the end it will be worth it" This Old House. Indeed.

High: My trip to Buffalo to meet with a dear Canadian sister (met in UB) to drive into Pennsylvania to meet up with some other dear Christian friends who had recently retired from Mongolia. Excellent.

Low: An extreme heartache.

High: God's wonderful presence and tender leading to a better, stronger place of heart, mind & soul.

Taking a 3-month, 4-5 days-a-week Dahn yoga class. Very healing in so many ways.

High: A 2-week trip to Israel with Randy. The trip of a lifetime. Will change the way my Bible reads forever.

Low: The ton of good-byes said in Mongolia. Very transient place as far as foreigners go.

High: The friendships forged in order to say the good-byes.

All in all, the highs far outweighed the lows--even overshadowing the heartache which I thought would surely consume me.

Enough looking back--onward ho! On to the new year. No fear (a theme the Lord hammered into me this last year :) So, a fond farewell to 2010 and

A Very Merry Mongolian Christmas

Yet again, it's been soooo long since I've blogged. Last week I even debated continuing to blog or not and came to a decision: my target audience will be my family and close friends. Period. If others take a peak, they're more than welcome, but my primary goal is to share my life which is so far away from home with the people who matter most to me. Whew! This decision has taken a great deal of pressure off me for some reason--after all, it's not like I have a huge blog audience just waiting for my next post. Anyway, I do enjoy the technical challenge and creativity involved. So, all that said, grab something warm and yummy to drink 'cause there are lots of pictures.

Here's a peak at my December in Mongolia. Expats start leaving the country en mass to their home countries for Christmas. This year I decided to stay and keep Randy company--though I have to admit I wasn't very good company as I tended to mope much more than I should have. However, there were good times to be had...
like holiday baking & cooking...(that's pumpkin for soup and pies cooking in the crock pot)

...the party with my Bible study sisters at Nancy's place (that's the hostess herself yukking it up :)...

holiday sewing...including backing 16 knitted baby blankets with flannel to go to a needy maternity hospital next week (no, I did NOT do the knitting--you know me better than that :), and a Christmas table top quilt. The table runner I bought from a local shop--it's from silk and not quilted at all. I think it is gorgeous!

...the Notre Dame Orphanage Christmas program--note the little sheep's behind--he was quite an unruly sheep :D

and our English Christian fellowship's program...

...our Christmas Eve buffet dinner with as many remaining expats as we could find plus two Mongolian friends, Shagai & Ulzimaa & children Tselmeg & Enkhmaa--my Kenyan friend, Jane and her Dutch husband, Jon, as well as the Mongolians had never seen or tasted turkey!

finishing up with the Wagner Holiday party on Christmas night....can you recognize the moms above in a group picture below? Oh, and the young guys from Wagner, Chris, Josh, Derrick & CJ, all dolled up?! OK, Randy & I are probably hard to recognize, too--hint: I'm the one dressed like the Queen Mum :)

...that's our December festivities. One more week of the month left and I am hoping it will be a quiet one :)

My Guy's Birthday

We just celebrated Randy's birthday here in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia--I believe the 7th that we've celebrated somewhere in Asia. --Don't miss the truly Asian sentiment on the gift bag :D

Anyway, his birthday wish was for a nice, quiet day. So, in honor of that wish, he got a birthday breakfast complete with real breakfast sausages! They're produced here in UB as a joint venture with New Zealand and are free of MSG and a whole bunch of other stuff. They tasted great (they ought to for what we paid for them; hence saved for a birthday breakfast!)--not as fatty as US sausage. ...hmm...amazing the things one gets excited about in a developing country... I had brought back this great Turkish robe from Land's End; perfect fit! So will monogram it soon. Let's see, we enjoyed a yummy lunch at a newer Thai restaurant, then home for his annual cheesecake. This year is the traditional New York recipe with a crust made from a cookie-dough batter--a recipe that originated with my dear Aunt Hare, who sadly is no longer with us. I've made pumpkin/ginger ones a few time that are really yummy, too.

According to Randy, this was a perfect birthday. Glad to oblige, glad for another year to celebrate, Dear!

Bloggers' Quilt Festival!

I'm so tickled to be a part of this year's Bloggers' Quilt Festival! My entry was done in Outer Mongolia (literally! --read on). This quilt is one of my favorite recent projects that I named "Renegade Geisha's" --renegade because two of the geisha's don't conform to the rest (mainly because I ran out of coordinating fabrics!). Can you find the two renegades? ;) The quilt incorporates fabric origami and the quilt itself is from Fantastic Fabric Folding --many projects from this book were a big hit with the Mongolian class pictured below.

Due to my husband's work, we live in Mongolia; and I was privileged to teach classes at a local quilting studio. I've included a picture of the class where we were working on the geisha blocks. The students spoke almost no English and I speak what I call Monglish--a lot of English sprinkled with Mongolian. Regardless, we all had a blast! ...and, I'm very pleased with this quilt of mine!

Little Wings...Not!

I was actually listening to "Little Wings" by Kris Delmhorst (amazing song; a current fave of mine--check it out!) and so the title for this blog...but these pics are from the Eagle Festival I got to attend last March outside of UB--not a "little" wing in sight. Since it has been ages since I blogged, I figure I need to start (again) somewhere. So, since Life prevented me from blogging these great pics, I thought I would start here. One pic of of my dear friends....no longer here; sigh. Their absence is sorely felt. Back to music...how did Ingrid Michaelson get into my head? Those of you into lyrics (my husband believes that 70% of the population is not--?!) will enjoy "Maybe." Or maybe not--may be where my head/heart is at these days. So, on a really positive lyric note (? ;) I'm also loving "A Crooked Road" by Darrell Scott.

ANYWAY...aren't these creatures amazingly beautiful? Took my breath away.

In response to my daughter Nikki's blog--always an inspiration! Check it out: fancythat.blogspot.com. I too have been sort off line when it comes to sewing. Living out of a suitcase has its challenges. Plus, it just seems to take me longer to accomplish anything these days--and there has been PLENTY to accomplish this summer. ....but sewing is still something that gives me great joy and and allows my mind and body to just go, "ahhhhh." So, I have been scheduling in my sewing time--yep, putting it right there in my planner. OCD? Perhaps; but it tends to give it the importance it deserves!
Anyway, here are a few recent projects: the sewing machine cover (great pattern I've used 3 times!--find it here: spoolsewing.com/blog/2008/07/25/sewing-machine-cozy ) Some aprons off of these great fabrics, and lastly, yesterday I started a quilted cover for my cedar chest in my bedroom. I'm aiming for a slightly Asian look in my bedroom; nothing too over the top, because, well, I'm not Asian ;) I got these greeaat fabrics last year when Nikki and I went to the Denver Sewing Expo together. I think the block is perfect, don't you? Oh--and I also made bath critter towel #8! Each grandchild gets one during their 1st year; the last one, a fox, I made for Andreas' 1st birthday on August 11. Note how I initially separated all those little pattern piece out--with grandchild #1, Hannah,--never dreaming I'd be blessed with 8! Smart Granny ;)

Kelby Monster Turns 2!

Kelby really isn't a monster; sometime in his first 2 years, the name just stuck. Kelby is all boy, yet verrry affectionate. His days are busy (very busy) being both. His 2nd birthday party was yesterday and a big hit. Mommy & Daddy decided on 11 am to include lunch and all the festivities in before nap time ;) The party had a Caterpillar theme and I was so excited to find that Cat has a whole line of books, puzzles & toys available through Amazon (hey, something had to help them through the last few lean years!). A few close friends and family gathered to help celebrate--fun! Nikki's longtime friend, Melissa, did the cake; amazing, huh?

Some Assembly Acquired: Yikes!

...words that strike fear into me. In 31 years of marriage, I have never assembled anything that I can remember! In fact, I seem to remember our wedding vows going something like, "...to love, honor, and handle all correspondence till death do us part (me)--and Randy responded with the same only to do all assembling. Well, here I am having to put my big girl panties on and do stuff around here since Randy has returned to Mongolia. Sigh. OK, there really are lots of other things I miss about him :) Anyway, here are my success stories of yesterday and today! One, my sewing chair and two, a little bistro set for out back. I'm so proud of myself! Next, a set of little table and chairs for the munchkins. Stay tuned :)

Here are my new best friends: 1) the power drill that Randy bought me before we left for Mongolia. This was an ill-conceived period of my life where I attempted to be handy. Not pretty. 2) my grandfather's tackle box that I've used for my tools, screws, nails, etc. However, as of this summer, I have outgrown it; so, Randy bought me 3) my shiny new (red!) craftsmen toolbox. Isn't it great?! He's the best. When I look at it, it feels he's here rooting for me :)

...and hey, what do you think of my former Post Soviet patio now? Looking a bit better I think--I love to have my quiet time out here in the mornings.

Sweet Summer Memories

Home Leave #6 just ended. Sigh.
Randy gets one month home in the US a year. He just left for Mongolia early Tues. morning. Sigh. But what a month we had! We started with 10 days in Spokane (the 1st few nights to ourselves--nice surprise after 3 months apart :) . Then on to Denver for more family & friends--lots of family & friends--and getting our house in shape for 2 people rather than the 5-7 the poor thing has accommodated for the last 6+ years. I must brag LOTS on Randy who worked tirelessly around the place doing everything from installing new kitchen plumbing and appliances to re-venting the dryer. Lots of door action, too: he put in the new storm door, fixed the noisy sliding pantry doors, new shower doors. He was hanging curtain rods the night before he got on the plane for Pete's sake!
PLUS he was working tirelessly in Wagner Asia's behalf regarding an oil lab in Mongolia and recruiting as many training instructors as he could find (willing to go to Mongolia--what a hoot to eavesdrop on his conversations..."no, not Arizona, Mongolia." What a man. Never a complaint about all the fix-it's, mind you. Definitely want to keep him. For sure. OK, will quit before I get mushy and embarrass all. Anyway, I think the last picture sums up our feelings on the matter of Randy's leaving.
However, the real highlights of the summer were times spent with our loved ones. Enjoy a peak at a few of our memories! Nikki finally figured out why my new camera was taking blurry shots. She worked her magic in the settings, so I can face the future with sharp shots ;)

Baby It's Hot Outside!

The park only holds 467, so we waited about an hour as 2 came out, 2 were let in...6 came out, 6 were let in...but it was worth it as we had lots of fun. Jesus, Me, and Yoga

Almost a month ago I signed up for a 3-month membership at a local Dahn yoga center--and I have to say it has been life changing! Seeking to conquer my constant heart palpitations and gain lots more flexibility in ever creakier joints and muscles, I am constantly surprised--and delighted--to find it a profoundly spiritual experience. Not in a zen way, no Hindu gods invoked--but lots & lots of Jesus.

I have found this stage of life to be an intersection where my spiritual life & emotions collided head on with my body. Things that for years I could sweep under the rug or just push through (ok, and blame others, hold grudges, lash out, etc., etc., yuk & yikes); well, my body would no longer tolerate it. Results: constant heart palpitations, sleep issues, anger/depression, etc. God used the hormonal stew of this life stage to bring me to a Ground Zero of sorts--what a journey it has been! My trip to Cambodia was the beginning of Change; it rebooted my decision-making processes for starters, and was so great just be alone with the Lord. Since then, He has been dealing with lots of garbage in me; i.e., sin. The Bible refers to this kind of sin as weights and snares (Heb 12:1). So true.

Back to yoga. My center is run by a great young couple--the husband is Korean and his adorable redheaded wife is American. The Dahn approach is holistic--the whole body, lots of emphasis on the "gut" as being our second brain (hey--who am I to argue?) The bulk of time is spent on stretching and postures while bringing in the mind and spirit and my mind and spirit respond with a constant flow of scripture, prayers and praise. The Lord and I have dealt with some deep issues during the last few weeks--many of them in yoga class! So, I try to make it 4-6 times a week.

I've also been reading some great books and enjoying lots of time in the Word (focusing on Mtt 5-7 and Jo 15:9-17). Oh! And my body can do some pretty amazing things now, too! Oh! And no more heart palpitations! Healing. Inside and out. Smile and sigh.

I'll share some of the books I've been immersed in as soon as I can figure out how to import the covers ;)

Well, it's been a long, long time since I've blogged--in blogger time anyway. I suppose sometimes living life takes precedence over blogging life. I have been in the US 6 weeks today (!) and have been totally swept up in the whirlwind that seems to surround life with my grandchildren. I have been very flattered to have several friends prod me to blog. Wow. So, not letting that go to my head, here are some pictures of my wee ones--the lights of my life and the focus of my prayers, for the most part (the next generation deserves plenty of prayer don't you think?!). That said, I have found it necessary to seek lodging somewhere else than my own home, which is presently occupied by 3 of my little darlings. Though I love them dearly, this stage of life I'm in demands large chunks of Peace & Quiet and a wee bit of Autonomy :)

Anyway, enjoy! The outdoor pictures are of Nikki's little ones rejoicing in their first visit to the home their parents just bought (but are waiting to close on.) I think they approve of the place, don't you? PS: I made the little green critter that Andreas is holding--isn't he cute in an ugly kind of way? ...and how about that football birthday cake Jana made for Elijah?

It's All about the Accessories

Believe me, I can appreciate a nice pair of shoes; and I really enjoy my heels. Really.

However, when traveling, here are the friends of my feet: Tevas! Yep, I'm a Teva gal. For the last 6+ years these 3 pair have taken my wherever my wanderlust as led--without a blister or sore ankle. My all-terrain Trudge Tevas on the left have climbed to tropical waterfalls and done the cobblestones of Prague & Istanbul--and cobblestones are notorius foot/leg killers. Then my Beach Tevas have walked miles & miles to and from beach and/or pool. Last, my Dress Tevas--not that I dress to kill when out and about; still, I try to avoid looking like a "soup sandwich" at dinner. These little black numbers go with skirts, capris, etc. plus do all the waterfront or city walking in total comfort. After a timeout, I rinse them all in vinegar water and they're good to go for the next trip.

I have to throw in a picture of my favorite timeout hat. My buddy. It's a Walleroo from Boulder, CO and it could tell some stories. It does require hand washing (those pesky sweat rings!), but it's worth it. It's light, totally pack-able and stays on my head no matter how windy without giving me a headache.

High time to give these faithful travel companions some press :)

...hmm...think Teva would pay me for commercial time?
